The National Association of Realtors reports that income rises dramatically as skill levels rise. Click for full report
What this means is that real estate jobs are one of the few careers where you can earn as little or as much as you want depending on the amount of effort applied. This makes it an ideal career for anyone who wants to work from home on a part-time basis and also for someone who wants to make a sizable income without limitations.

What it takes from you:
-
The desire to earn what you are really worth.
-
Ability to be your own boss. You must be a self starter.
-
A winning personality: people buy from whom they like and trust.
-
A willingness to genuinely aid your clients with their housing requirements.
-
Sociability: while the Internet is a great tool it cannot replace interpersonal relationships. To succeed you must be willing to show houses, though our system of listing notifications limits showings to only those homes buyers are really interested in, often two or three homes on average per sale. You must be willing to take listings which generally requires at least one visit to the seller's home.
How much you earn depends on you. As an example, a typical real estate transaction in the Capital Region on an average $250,000 home works like this: If the property is someone else's listing and you sell it you would get $3,125.00. If you list the same home and someone else sells it you would get $5,625.00. If you list and sell the same home (which is most likely) you would get $13,125.00. This is for the entry level commission split at Real Estate New York of 50% (higher than any other Capital Region Real Estate Company).
After $500K of sales (about 2 home) you move up to a 55% split, after $1,00K you get a 60% split on a sliding scale up to 90% of the total commission. And of course, half of the homes sold in the Capital Region are priced well over $250,000 up to $15 million. Do the math for yourself. I think you'll be presently surprised.
What it takes to be a New York State licence real estate sales person:

Oh, one more thing: we no longer have a Million Dollar Club, it's just too darn easy to sell a million dollars worth of housing these days. On the other hand, it takes a special person to make it really big in real estate. Not neccessarily smarter or better educated or connected but someone who really wants it more than the agent down the block.
If, on the other hand, you don't need that kind of income you can always make as much or as little as you need.
If all this sounds appealing it is. Most people who become successful real estate agents do so for life.
