Westerlo, New York is a town in south-central Albany County with an area of 58.5 square miles and a population of 3,361 as of the 2010 census.
History: The Town of Westerlo located in southeast Albany County NY was carved from the towns of Coeymans and Rensselaerville in 1815 and named after Rev. Eilardus Westerlo a minister of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Albany, NY. The town was originally called Chestertown or Chesterville.
The above picture is of the Chesterville Hotel circa 1850's located at the present corner of County Routes 143 and 401. It burned circa 1890's

Abundant timber and hydro power provided the necessary resources for thriving tanning, lumber, wool, grain mills. However, in Westerlo most early residents grew crops or maintained livestock.
Below historical maker for the Grant & Eadie Store, now the Westerlo Library and museum. Potash was produced here circa 1700's. Surplus timber was burned and refined by residents or store owners. The store was in almost continuous use since 1831 until 1982 when it was donated to the town.
