Halfmoon, NY is located in the south part of Saratoga County north of the Mohawk River and the Town of Watervliet, on the west bank of the Hudson River, east of the Northway (I-87) and south of route 67(see map above)
History The first European residents of the town made their homes along the Mohawk River circa 1680. in 1788 the town was incorporated while still part of Albany County. In 1816 the Town of Waterford was established from the original town of Halfmoon and the name briefly changed to Orange later to be restored in 1820. Clifton Park was also subtracted from the Town's area in 1828
Often believed to have been named for Henry Hudson's ship the Halve Maen (Dutch for Half Moon) the name actually refers to the crescent shape of the town.
The principal community in Halfmoon is the City of Mechanicville which lies on the town's northern border. However, the portion of Mechanicville north of the Anthony Kill is in the Town of Stillwater. The name Mechanicville derives from the occupation of early residents as coopers, masons, carpenters, butchers, stone-cutters which were called "mechanics" as opposed to those who made their living in agriculture.
Demographics had a population of 21,540 (2010 census) covering an area of 33 square miles. As of the 2000 census there were 7,779 homes at a population density of 565 people per square mile. The ethnic diversity origins are: 95% European, 1% African, 1% American, less than 2% Asian, 2% Hispanic. The average household income was $46,236 as of 2000.
Of the 13,783 households 36% had children under the age of 18, 64% were married, 6% had a single female head of household, and 27% were non-traditional families. 22% of households were made up of singles and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The mean average household size was 2.74 and the mean average family size was 3.24.
The age distribution shows 26.9% under the age of 20, 5 1/2% from 20 to 24, 16% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.2 years. For 18 and older, there were 49% males and 50% females. The median income for a household was $82,852, and the median family income was $98,275. Men had a median income of $68, 417 versus $46,948 for women. The per capita income was $37,406.
