HISTORY: The first residents of the island were the Amenhanit, Aepjen, and Wanapet Native American tribes who called the island Pachanhanit or Nehanenesick. In 1665 the tribes sold the land to Kiliaen van Rensselaer
A battle of the French & Indian war is believed to have been fought where the Troy-Green Island Bridge now stands
In 1796 the northern part of the island was sold to George Tibbits followed by the sale of the southern part in 1834. TIbbits renamed the island Tibbits Island
The village was also the home of the Eaton and Gilbert Car Works 1853 making luxury rail cars and the first sleeper, dining, and electric cars in the world
Henry Ford was introduced to the island by his friend Thomas Edison who is said to have frequented the island's north shore where he camped and fished with his industry friends John Burroughs, Harvey Firestone, Harvey Firestone, Jr who called themselves, "Four Vagabond Gentlemen"
Ford built a plant on the island that manufactured radiators, heaters, and springs for his automobiles at one time employing nearly 1,000 workers. In 1954 the Ford Motor Company sponsored the first little league team in the Nation, today the Green Island Little League Team
Ford built here to utilize the hydroelectric power generated by the Federal Dam of the Hudson River. In 2000 the Green Island Power Authority seized the old Ford Dam to provide inexpensive power to north end industry and residents who pay approximately 40% less for electricity than neighboring communities.
