Gloversville is a municipality located in New York State's Fulton County. Since early times the city was the center of the country's glove production industry providing employment for the majority of its citizens, as well as an immigrant population that included Hollywood producer/director Samuel Goldwyn.

Demographics As of Y2K, there were over 15,000 residents living in the community with over 6,000 families in over 7,000 residences. The racial composition of the city is over 95% Caucasian, less than 2% of African decent, less than 1% American Tribal, Asian, Pacific Islander, and other races, with less than 2% Hispanic The population age at the time was 25% below age 18, 8% from age 18 to 24, 27% ages 25 to 44, 21% age 45 to 64, with 17% age 65 or older. The mean average age was 37 years. For every male there were 1.127 females. The mean average yearly income for a housing unit in the city is over $26,000 as of the 2000 census, and the mean average income for a per-family was over $34,000. Men had a mean average income of over $27,000 versus $21,000 plus for women. The capita/income for the city was $15,000. However, nearly 15% of family income and over 19% of the residents were below the federal poverty line, which includes over 29% for residents under 18 and over 9% of residents over the age of 65.

History The area called Kingsborough was purchased by early settler William Johnson. Then in 1752, Arent Stevens purchased additional lands. in the 1800's Puritans migrated west from New England to settle here. The propensity of woodlands supplied large quantities of bark needed for leather processing which transformed the region to the status of a leather manufacturing center early in its history. Circa 1890 to 1950 over 90 percent of American gloves were made in the City. With the creation of the U.S. Postal Office in 1828, the name "Gloversville" became official. The Glove Theatre was the Schines' preferred movie house with the location of movie theatre company headquartered in the City. First run films occasionally premiered in Gloversville before they opened in New York City or Los Angeles. The demise of the glove making industry resulted in the city's financial depression, with many main street stores abandoned. Many residences were vacated when residents leaving the City for employment in other locations.
