Clifton Park, New York is located in the south part of the county approximately 12 miles north of Albany, 7 miles northeast of Schenectady, and 10 miles south of Saratoga Springs (see map above)

History

Clifton Park was first settled in the 17th Century on a patent granted by Lord Cornbury to Nanning Harmansen from land purchased from the Native American Mohican who may or may not have called the area Shenendehowa (referring to Round or Ballston Lake) from which the high school derives its name.

By 1723 the region had over 20 settlers, and adopted the name "Canastigione" (meaning corn flats). The territory along the Mohawk River was first occupied with ferries established to cross the river.

In 1786 Eldert Vischer founded the Vischer Ferry near the village that bears his family name but was actually named for his father Nicholas Vischer who built his home in the area.

Edward Rexford established another small hamlet a few miles to the northwest on the river naming it Rexford Flats after himself, today just called Rexford.

Clifton Park as we now know it was created In 1828-1829 from of the Town of Half Moon as the last town in Saratoga County to be incorporated. The area was originally composed of agricultural land with little hamlets and homes, churches and businesses along was is not Route 9. When I-87 was built population and commerce grew exponential.

Demographics

As of the 2008 census there were 37,708 residents of the area, 13,782 homes with 10,077 families. There were 14,263 houses.

The ethnic character of the town was 92% White, 2% African American, 3% Asian.

Of the 13,783 households 36% had children under the age of 18, 64% were married, 6% had a single female head of household, and 27% were non-traditional families. 22% of households were made up of singles and 7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The mean average household size was 2.74 and the mean average family size was 3.24.

The age distribution shows 26.9% under the age of 20, 5 1/2% from 20 to 24, 16% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38.2 years. For 18 and older, there were 49% males and 50% females. The median income for a household was $82,852, and the median family income was $98,275. Men had a median income of $68, 417 versus $46,948 for women. The per capita income was $37,406.
