The Charming Village of Altamont, New York is located in the township of Guilderland, Albany County, NY. The population was 1,720 as of the 2010 census the community numbered 1,720 citizens. The name means "high or tall mountain."
History In colonial times, this area was part of the of Rensselaerwyck Manor, granted by the Dutch West India Company to Killian Van Rensselaer in 1630. The area was known as Hellerburgh in the early 18th century. In the early 19th century Knowersville was founded in the rural part of Albany county just below the Helderberg Mountains. This settlement eventually became known as Altamont.
Altamont was a summer vacation spot that could be reached by train. The train station which once served this once busy community is now the Altamont Free Library. The old hotel in the town center burned down nearly a century ago. Since 1893 a village fair has been held annually in Altamont Fairground in addition as other venues. The village was incorporated in 1890. Hiram Griggs (1836–1909) was the first mayor of the village of Altamont and his home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
GeographyThe Village of Altamont occupies an area of 1.2 sq. mi. (3.1 km2), all of its area is land although the Joriohenen and the Ostenraakie creeks run through the village center.
Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 1,739 persons, 646 individuals, and 474 family members living in the village. The population desity was 1,451.5 individuals per sq. kilometer (558.9/km²). There were 674 dwellings at a typical density of 563.2 per sq. kilometer (216.9/km²). The ethnic diversity of the city was 97.64% Caucasion, 1.09% Africa Combined states, 0.12% Asian, 0.06% Hawaiian Islander, 0.17% other, and 0.92% from two or more. Hispanic or Latino of any competition were 1.04% of the inhabitants. There were 646 individuals out of which 42.7% had children under the age of 18 residing with them, 60% were partners living together, 11% had a women homeowner with no partner present, and 26% were non-families. 22% of all housholds were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 yrs. or older. The typical family size was 2 2/3. Age deliniation as of 2000 was 30% under the age of 18, 5% from 18 to 24, 30% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 yrs or older. The average age was 38 yrs.. Gender division was 100 adult women for 88 adult men.
The median income for a household was $52,500, and the median income for a family was $61,750. Males had a median income of $45,865 versus $32,721 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,232. About 2.7% of families and 4.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.5% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
